Kayak polo in Bellingham is still thriving 27 years later

Every Wednesday and Sunday, a group of six to 20 people gather at Marine Park for kayak polo. This game originated in Great Britain in the late 19th century and was introduced to Bellingham by Gary Southstone, the founder of Kayak Polo Bellingham. Southstone first played  the sport with a group in Seattle during the late ‘90s, where they played with some creative twists.

How could Bellingham acquire a WHL team?

The Bellingham Hamsters? The Bellingham Beavers? The Bellingham Bananas? Who knows what a semi-professional hockey team would be called in Bellingham, but the thought of there being one for some of the region’s most ravenous fans of the sport brings promise enough that maybe, just maybe, one day the vision could come to fruition.

After graduation, these WWU runners are still chasing the dream

In spring 2010, Courtney Olsen became a Western Washington University track and field program record holder in two events: the women's 1,500 meters and the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Now, over a decade later, Olsen has traded the title of “school record holder” for “world record holder,” and she’s not done yet.
