Swim with DECA ‘sharks’ at their first Shark Tank workshop

On Thursday, May 7, Western Washington University’s Collegiate Distributive Education Clubs of America team is hosting its first-ever Shark Tank workshop on Western’s campus at 5 p.m. in Academic Instructional Center West room 305. They will bring in DECA alumni to act as the “sharks” for students collaborating on their business ideas.

Two teammates, one national stage

Out of the 118 players selected nationwide for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Player of the Year Watchlist, two come from the same program. At Western Washington University, third baseman Maleah Andrews and shortstop Hailey Rath have earned national recognition and helped to elevate the Vikings’ softball program.

Swipe, eat, repeat — But at what cost?

Western’s student meal plans for the 2025-2026 school year are set to change in the fall. This will likely raise the costs and reduce access to food for many students who live on campus. The dining program intends to shift towards a dining system giving students a set number of meals per week while cutting the number of Dining Dollars students receive.

Summer involvement around Bellingham and at WWU

As Western Washington University transforms from spring to summer, opportunities for involvement change drastically, and campus life and activity lessen substantially. The transitional season can serve students choosing to remain in Bellingham from June through September as a time to step outside of their usual circles and campus routines.

College in the High School: Top of its class in benefits

Increasing amounts of U.S. high school students are taking college courses in high school, according to the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships. Western Washington University hopes to be a part of this continued trend by becoming more active in the College in the High School program.

Students for Ecological Restoration Club works to rehabilitate Sehome Hill Arboretum

The idea for the Students for Ecological Restoration Club originated in spring 2024, when students Caleb Barville and his friend Bruce Cudkowicz realized Western Washington University didn’t have an ecological restoration club. With environmental science professor James Helfield as their faculty advisor, the club began hosting activities in the fall with Barville as director.
