Women's basketball wins important game
By The Front | January 15Senior forward Tia Briggs contributed a career-high 25 points to lead Western women’s basketball team to their seventh-straight win. The 71-53 victory over Seattle Pacific University improved Western’s record to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Briggs also picked up 10 rebounds, giving her a double-double. “At Western, we take pride in our defense,” Briggs said. “We know our defense sparks our offense.” Vikings head coach Carmen Dolfo was also impressed with the defense displayed by her team. “I think [the defense] has really been helping us these last few games where we may have been a little off offensively,” Dolfo said. ”But our defense really has saved us.” The first quarter ended with Seattle Pacific up 14-12. Late in the second quarter, the Vikings went on a 13-0 run to end the first half with a 30-23 lead. They carried the momentum over to the second half and scored another nine unanswered points to extend the lead to 39-23. “[The pivotal moment was] when we all decided to pressure them,” Briggs said. “We didn’t want them to get any more offensive boards. We just wanted to bury them in the second half.” The Vikings look to extend their run when they face Simon Fraser University Tuesday, Jan. 17, in Burnaby, British Columbia.
